George Arthur Cooper, Age 20

Private, 2683, 2nd Battalion, Manchester Regiment.

The only thing known about George is that he was born in Dawley and was quite possibly a regular as he has a low service number and was killed in action while serving with a regular army battalion quite early in the war, His death coming on the 2nd May 1915 on the Ypres salient.

Extra notes: All George’s military records say he was born at Dawley but he was Christened at the Nabb St Georges on Jan 6th 1895, his Father’s name was Joseph Cooper and his mother Ann or Annie, the family was living at Old Park in the 1901 census.

His father died and was buried at Malinslee on the 5th Jan 1907, in the 1911 census George is living at 34, Trevor Street, Oldham with his widowed mother as head, his occupation is Cotton Operative Piecers Inmule Room, his mother remarried to Isaiah Edge and was living at 18, Hillside, Lilleshall Nr Wellington, Salop, when receiving George’s war pension.
